Lauren--I know, can never take for granted what is in the Bay. I've been traveling and living elsewhere for the last few months, and often get pangs of being able to choose from a zillion different health food stores, farmer's markets, and street food.

Lola--ACV is the best! 1 tbl. in warm water, 15 minutes before you eat and your digestion will improve DRAMATICALLY. Or, if you like living on the edge, just take a straight shot of the stuff!

Michelle--I certainly feel your pain! Strict raw foods was the worst for my body, but try telling that to a raw foodist! We each individually have to find what feels best for us. Sometimes, that can take a LONG time...

Christine,

I've read a zillion diet books, tried half of them, I've fasted and cleansed and done raw foods only and the Atkins meat extravaganza. A few years ago I reached pretty much the same conclusion as you just stated, but I never could have articulated it so well.

This post is great. I'm not perfect at this by a long shot, but when I shop I try to load up on 1 ingredient foods, and keep everything as a low-ingredient as possible. The only thing I wish so badly was easier to find is raw milk. My mom just purchased a cheese-making kit and we're dying to try it, but raw milk is just impossible to find! We went to a local market to ask about it last weekend, and they actually gave us a petition to sign demanding they be allowed to sell it!

Thanks so much for all the great tips!

Thanks Christine!

I'll be referring back to this post often as I'm really trying to overhaul my diet (slowly) and hoping to clean things up. It wasn't really bad (I do eat healthy), but it could be drastically improved.

My aunt just introduced me to raw apple cider vinegar which I plan on buying.

Great post. I was vegan for around 5 years, more for political reasons than health reasons. But it took a toll on my body--I had lots of digestion problems from eating processed fake meat, and I wasn't getting enough healthy fats, so I always felt hungry, overate and actually gained weight. I've been a mindful omnivore for 2 years now, and feel infinitely better (plus, it's a lot easier to travel!). I just try to eat things as close to their natural state as possible. And hit the farmer's markets, which are plentiful in our little Bay Area paradise. :)
