Will BNT Get the Colbert Bump?

This week, an article I wrote for Brave New Traveler a few months ago charging United Airlines with fatism, showed on up on ‘The Colbert Report.’

Seems the fatism (or “weightism,” as Colbert trademarks during the episode) debate is all the rage these days, what with babies being turned down for health insurance and models getting fired for being too fat. As usual, Colbert rages against the injustices of “Big Government,” this time for trying to slim down the US population. I definitely chuckled uncontrollably during this segment, but am thankful that he had a Professor as a guest who makes it clear that being large does not equate being unhealthy.

Check out the video here, where the article shows up at 1:31.

Cancer Schmancer

Cancer seems to hit more and more people everyday, and it not only seems to strike younger and younger – it truly does. To honor those with the most common form to hit women, Breast Cancer, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Check out Leigh Shulman’s piece on what you can do to protect yourself, and to help others, sometimes in truly unconventional ways. Which is just the way we like it.

The A-B-Cs of C-L-A

Interested in getting (back) into shape before the holidays hit? Then check out Nutritionist Sylvie Nalezny’s piece, How I Lost Those Last Ten Pounds: A Birthday Present to Myself. She takes a holistic approach to weight loss, including carving out time for herself and the all important saying “no” more often.

Plus, you can read about her secret weapon supplement. It’s one I knew about, but she’s the first person that I’ve personally known who has followed the routine, and it really worked for her.

Tar Heel Born, Gluten-Free Bread (or Cereal)

Something new for you gluten-freers out there. A friend sent me a link to a new site called Custom Choice Cereal, where you can create your own gluten-free cereal from three different bases – granola, corn flakes, and ‘good morning’ flakes. The site takes you through dried fruit and nut and seed choices, and then you get to name the cereal whatever you would like.

I haven’t tried it yet, and choices are minimal at this point. But they do make the cereals in a dedicated GF facility, and the site is easy to follow. I’m sure they’ll add more fruit and nut options as time goes on.

Plus, the founders are UNC-Chapel Hill business school grads, so gotta show some lovin’ for any Tar Heel that is establishing a healthy product.
