Balancing Life Through Balancing Your Weight

Many people think losing weight is simply about looking better physically. Some might also jump on the weight-loss bandwagon due to health concerns. But what many people fail to understand is that losing anywhere from several to more than a few pounds can effect the whole person by creating a positive outlook on life.

Each of us is a whole being, made up of a mind, body, and spirit. When one of those entities is out of balance, the other two feel it – and are unfortunately “brought down” in the process. This can lead to low energy levels, depression, and eventually, disease. The key is not to try and work on all of those areas all at once, but rather to find your way in through one area, which will end up touching the other two. A simple way you can do this is to make a change physically by shedding a few pounds.

Fast weight loss can be detrimental to your health in the long run, so approach weight loss from the perspective of making long-term lifestyle changes. Smart choices for shedding unwanted pounds include removing refined sugar and carbs as much as possible, cutting back on caffeine (due to its negative effect on blood sugar levels), and focusing on eating whole, organic vegetables and fruits.

An Array Of Benefits

As you begin to lose weight, your energy rises. You feel more adept at handling the daily stresses of life, such as traffic, busy work schedules, and taking care of the kids. Having more energy also means having more focus, which can make these sometimes menial-seeming tasks more enjoyable. They may also end up getting done more quickly, which gives you some more “me” time, including engaging in some positive-feeling movement, and maybe even a little bit of focused breathing.

We would all like to get more done in life, including developing the self. Worrying less about your physical appearance due to fewer pounds on the body opens you up to participating more in life, whether that be a pick-up game of Frisbee with the family, or taking that dance class you were always nervous to step foot in. Yoga might finally feel feasible because of the new ease you feel in your body, and both the physical and psychological benefits of this ancient practice will only help to improve your health and overall quality of life.

Weight loss isn’t just about fitting back into those skinny jeans. It’s about stimulating health from the inside out, on all levels. Take your time in making real dietary changes that will have a positive influence not just for the next several months, but for years to come. Not only will your body thank you, but your mind and spirit will, too.

    Great article! I have been reading a lot of your stuff and am really enjoying it. I really liked this particular one because I think that keeping yourself at a healthy weight is one of the most important and influential things that we can do for ourselves.
